About Us

Longtown Community Primary School

Longtown Community Primary School really is at the heart of its community.

Situated in the picturesque Olchon Valley, our school benefits from spacious modern facilities overlooked by Longtown Castle. We are a thriving and successful small school in a beautiful and unique setting in rural Herefordshire. The staff team provides a safe and stimulating environment both within and outside school enabling our pupils to achieve their fullest potential in all areas of school life. We have exciting and well-equipped play areas with extensive field and environmental facilities. The school maintains strong links with all local places of worship.

We aim to provide an environment not only to learn in but to learn from.

We are delighted to have been judged "GOOD" again during our recent Ofsted inspection (September 2018).  It is clear from the report that the school is now even better than four years ago and that staff continue to work together with commitment and enthusiasm to create the best possible learning environment for our children. The report stated:

"Pupils are happy to come to school and they feel proud of their school."

"It is like one big family, one pupil said"

"Staff care deeply about the well being of pupils."

"Many parents said how supportive and adaptable the school is to ensure it meets each child's individual need.  One parent said: 'This personal approach and the positive nurturing environment the staff create make Longtown an exceptional school.'"

"Leaders are acutely aware of the need that pupils in this small rural school are well prepared for the wider world....."

"Pupils are engaged and focused in lessons and this makes a large contribution to their effective learning.  It is a school where 'everyone strives to be their very best'."

  • There is an on-site pre-school and structured arrangements enable a smooth transition for children.
  • Regular observations by independent assessors that are consistently judged as good with many outstanding examples.
  • Formal links with the "Outstanding" (Ofsted 2013 ) Fairfield High School which provides specialist teaching in areas such as PE and Music, aiding the transition of KS2 pupils to secondary school.

We work together with other local schools as part of a Golden Valley Collaboration and the Headteachers meet regularly to share ideas, organise events, save money by sharing costs and discuss how we can work sustainably together for the benefit of our children’s education in the Golden Valley and beyond.

Please enjoy learning more about our school from our website, but we would love you to come and visit us too.
