Class  2

Welcome to Class 2 at Longtown Primary School

Dear Parent,

We are very excited to be starting a new academic year.  This year our Class will be called Class Two and it will be made up of Year One and Year Two pupils. Class Two will be taught by Mrs Jefferies, Mrs Fawcett (Fridays) and Mrs Manning.

Our topic this half term is ‘Toys’. This Toys topic will teach your child about popular toys through the 20th century and the early 21st century. Firstly, it asks the children to think about their favourite toy from today before moving on to look at toys which were popular when their parents and grandparents were children. (If you have any old toys in the attic or would be happy to come in and talk about your old toys, let us know!) Throughout the unit, the children will develop a range of historical skills such as: asking and answering questions, identifying and interpreting different sources and recognising change and exploring how this influences them today.

In Science, the children will be learning about ‘Everyday Materials’. The topic will teach your child about everyday materials including wood, plastic, metal, water and rock. Children will learn to identify and name everyday materials and will have the opportunity to explore the properties of these materials. Children also will carry out a simple investigation to help them decide which material would be most suitable to use for an umbrella. At the end of the unit children apply their knowledge of everyday materials to sort objects by their properties.

In Maths, the children will continue to work on their place value skills.

The children will as ever, access a broad and rich curriculum and take part in RE, Art, PE , RSE, Music and of course Forest School!

PE will be on a Wednesday and Friday. Please could children wear their kit to school on those days. Please make sure their PE kit follows school guidelines.

Forest School will be every Tuesday. Please can children wear their uniform to school and bring old clothes and wellies to change into.

Once the children have settled back into school, we will set some home learning tasks. We ask that your child reads as much as possible, ideally every night. Book bags will be changed every week and progress monitored. Please let us know how they are getting on and when you read your schoolbooks with your child.

Year Two children will have spellings to complete. These will link to the spelling patterns taught in class and be given out for the half term. A spelling test will be held on a Friday.

Maths homework is accessed through the ‘Numbots’ game. All children have a ‘Numbots’ log in. Your child’s log in is attached. NumBots is an online game and playing little and often will significantly improve your child’s recall and understanding of number bonds and addition and subtraction facts. These are critical foundations in maths so we are excited by the impact NumBots will have.

We have many adventures planned for this year and we are excited to get started. Please get in touch if you have any questions or queries.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Jefferies, Mrs Fawcett & Mrs Manning
